Jane Eyre

And our first #bookclub book is out! Throwing it way back to the classics, we are starting our journey with Jane Eyre. This is a special one as this was among the first second hand books that I had gotten, and I loved the feel and smell of used paper as I turned the pages. It was also the first classic I read written by a female author, and I loved the fact that the story centred around a spirited woman who knew the choices she had, and was badass enough to make the decisions she wanted, to carve her life out for herself 🦋

Ranked among the most loved romance novels of all time (and for good reason too), Jane Eyre follows the journey of a young orphaned woman as she leaves Lowood Institution, a charity school, and enters a new phase of her life as a governess at Thornfield Hall. We are introduced to a multitude of characters: the sweet but ambiguous housekeeper Alice Fairfax; Adele Varens, the young French girl who Jane is tasked to teach; and the master of the house, Mr. Edward Rochester, who makes an appearance (not without furore) a few pages into the book. Jane soon falls for the impetuous Mr. Rochester, who reciprocates her feelings. However, this pretty rose-tinted picture of an ideal love story is interrupted by mysterious happenings that occur in the manor, that get more menacing as Jane and Mr. Rochester get closer. As terrifying secrets are revealed and past events get tangled with the present, their love and trust for each other will be tested in unforeseen ways, begging the question: Can you truly ever escape from your past?

This has been a personal favourite of mine since forever, and I hope y'all love it just as much as I do :)
